There are few shows out there that you can count on for an instant boost of good vibes, good food, and good conversation the way you can count on The Chef Show. While the ending of the season was frustrating (no spoilers, but it’s hard to make some of those choices work when the show’s already been greenlit for a second season), the show’s commitment to building upon the past for this new future vision was an early pleasure of 2020. But Picard delivered plenty of new characters and a new mystery to make sure it didn’t feel like reruns. Thus there were plenty of moments to trigger our nostalgia for the past, including the season’s standout episode “Nepenthe,” which featured Picard paying a visit to some dear old friends.

The return of Sir Patrick Stewart to his most iconic role could have hewed closely to Star Trek: The Next Generation, but instead creators Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, Kirsten Beyer, and Alex Kurtzman (with Stewart actively participating in the writers’ room) went in a very different direction with Star Trek: Picard, letting the years since the end of TNG pass naturally and showing us the next phase of Picard’s life, tinged with tragedies known and unknown. America, Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet, and Upload, plus the swan songs of great series like BoJack Horseman and Schitt’s Creek. But it did also bring us outstanding new series like Mrs. 2020 has been, let’s be clear, a dumpster fire in so many ways. There is very adult animation and very sweet family comedy on the list below tribute is also paid to silly superheroes and captivating documentaries. As you’ll see below, we couldn’t keep it to that, as there were just too many great series we wanted to celebrate. Right now, the world is very lucky to be sheltering in place with a lot of truly outstanding programming - while it’s unclear what the next six months will bring (both when it comes to television and the world), what is clear is that this list of the best shows to air so far this year was originally going to be capped at 20.
